Rochester Memorial Day Boat Race

Rochester Memorial Day Boat Race

The Rochester Memorial Day Boat Race was held on Monday, May 27th!  The race involves homemade river boats, taking off from Gramma Hartley’s Reservoir on Snipatuit Road in Rochester at 1 minute intervals, and ending at the Herring Run in Mattapoisett.

This year 44 boats started the race and 43 boats finished the course.  The weather was gorgeous and there was a great turnout of spectators cheering on the racers!

The race involves going in and out of 3 ponds in the beginning before putting in the Mattapoisett River.  This year a dam broke and the water in the second and third ponds flooded out leaving a swampy mess, but there was still a channel down the middle of each pond, so the racers were still able to navigate the boats through the ponds.  The race went on without a hitch.  The race has only been cancelled once in its long history due to World War 2.

First place in the Open Division went to Dan Hartley and Billy Watling, second to Alex Milde and Paul Milde, third to Jay Lawrence and Andy Weigel, fourth to Ian MacGregor and Eli MacGregor and fifth to Peter MacGregor and Matt Buckley.

Co-ed Division: First Samantha Hathaway and Ethan Hathaway, second Michelle Kirby and Andy Hammerman and third to Kelsey Collasius and Andrew Martin.

Parent/Child:  First place to Ellsea Roy and Jonathan Roy, second to Wyatt Harding and Harrison Harding Jr. and third to Catherine Everett and Colin Everett

Women’s Division:  First place to Caitlin Stopka and Emma Knox, second to Kylie Bean and Christina Beam and third to Kristen Roy and Lindsay Harding

Junior Boys Division:  First place to Tucker Roy and Cliff Hedges V

It’s always a great family tradition! The award ceremony included many raffle prizes including a river boat to be used in next year’s race.

Put it on your calendar for next year! It would be great to see even more boats entered next year!
